Carolina Galleries specializes in the art of the Charleston Renaissance. The Charleston Renaissance is defined as 1915-1940, when the war-ravaged Lowcountry inspired dozens of painters and illustrators, from local artists such as Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Alice Ravenel Huger Smith and Anna Heyward Taylor, to nationally prominent artists such as Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, and Alfred Hutty. These artists captured Charleston in a natural and cultural transition that is still glimpsed today in abandoned rural rice canals and ivy-laden alleys. Carolina Galleries consistently offers a superb collection of this stellar period in American art. Landscapes and genre scenes in oil, pastel, and water-color span the entire century in Charleston, with primary focus on the masterpieces of the early 1900's.
